"Together, we achieve."

welcome to year 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to year 6! We hope you all had a good summer and are well rested for the busy, but exciting year ahead.

Learning

In English we are reading Kindlekrax and will be working on formal and informal language, extending our range of sentence structures and understanding writing for different purposes. In Maths we will continue learning our timestables, the four operations (+ - x ÷) and working with decimals. Our Science topic for this half term is the Human Body. We will study the heart, the circulatory system, the digestive system and how to keep fit and healthy. There are lots of fun experiments in this topic (including a sheep heart dissection!). Our History, Geography and Art topic for the half term is Mayan Civilisations. The children will learn about the rise and fall of the Mayan empire, significant Mayan inventions and how the Mayans lived.

Homework

We will be sending homework each Friday and this should be returned by Wednesday. It will then be marked and returned home.

Homework Due

In addition to weekly homework, we expect all children to read for at least 15-20 minutes each day. Reading is a fundamental part of the children’s development and it has a positive impact on comprehension skills, writing, maths and many other subjects. Children should complete their reading records to evidence the reading they have done and bring these to school every day where they will be checked by your child’s teacher.

Information Session

On the 18th September at 3:45pm, there will be an opportunity for you to meet with the Year 6 teaching team to discuss the curriculum and your child’s learning for the year ahead.

We will also be handing out information about our upcoming trip to Kingswood (16.10.19 – 18.10.19). If you are not yet signed up to attend the Kingswood trip, but would like to, please speak to your class teacher as soon as possible.

Uniform and PE Lessons

Make-up and jewellery, with the exception of stud ear-rings and a watch are not allowed. All children are expected to wear full school uniform at all times. PE for Year 6 will be on a Wednesday afternoon. Children will need to bring a PE kit to change into and a pair of trainers. If there is a medical reason that your child is unable to do PE please send in a signed note or contact the office.

Music

This year, Camden Music Service will continue providing Year 6 children with specialist music lessons each week teaching every child either the trumpet or the trombone for free. Each child will continue to have their own instrument to look after and practise with at home for the year.

We would like to remind you that school starts at 9 o’clock and children can come up to the classroom from 8:50. The Maths lesson starts at 9am. This is an important session and children who are late miss key skills and information.

We look forward to continuing working with both you and your children. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Year 6 SATs Breakfast for Parents/Carers

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 6,

In May, year 6 will complete their end of key stage two assessments, also known as SATs. These are important end of year assessments and we want our parents to feel as confident as possible in supporting their children. We will be holding a Y6 SATs Breakfast  for parents, carers and children on Monday 18th November from 9am—10am. The event will take place in the three year 6 classrooms (Amazon, Nile and Congo). Please bring your child to school as normal and make your way to your child’s class with them.

The aim of this event is to ensure you feel as informed as possible about your child’s upcoming SATs. There will also be FREE breakfast for all and a FREE set of CGP revision guides for all children. There will be a brief information session, sharing key messages followed by a session to talk to your child’s teacher and other parents. Please note there is no obligation for you to stay for the full hour (9am—10am) however, we do ask that you arrive promptly by 9:15am so we can start the information session.

Please let us know if you are able to attend by completing and returning the slip below no later than Monday 11th November. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible; let us know if you have any questions about the event.

Thanks for your continued support,

Year 6 Team
