Year 5
September 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Year 5! It has been fantastic having everybody back at school after such a long time out. We hope that you had a good summer and are well rested for the busy year ahead.
Topic
Our topic this half term is Shackleton, which is a history based topic. The children will have plenty of opportunities to extend their geographical knowledge and develop their skills in historical enquiry as well as learning through art and design technology. At the end of the term, we will find a way of sharing our work with you.
English and Maths
In English we will be studying a book called Ice Trap which is about Shackleton’s journey. From this the children will be writing newspaper reports. Maths will continue to build on children’s knowledge of key maths skills. We will be regularly revisiting work from year 4 to ensure that any gaps in their learning are filled. There will still be a strong emphasis on fully securing times tables and related division facts. We would appreciate your support in practising these regularly at home.
PE
PE this term will be on Tuesday afternoons. Children will be split into two classes of 30. This year, the children will not be swimming. Children should wear their PE kit to school that day, the school kit includes: a white t-shirt, green shorts and green school jumpers. Leggings or tracksuit bottoms can be worn underneath the shorts in cold weather.
General Expectations
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school starts for year 5 at 9 o’clock and doors open at 8:55am at the Glastonbury entrance so children are ready to start the day promptly at 9 o’clock. Collection is at exactly 3.30pm for year 5 from the same entrance. Make-up and jewellery, with the exception of stud earrings and a watch are not allowed, for health and safety reasons. We will also be expecting children to be in the appropriate named school uniform every day (except Tuesday). If you have any questions about uniform expectations, please do not hesitate to ask.
Homework
Maths and English homework will be set by the class teacher on a weekly basis. We will be setting homework and spellings through Google Classroom. It will be uploaded on a Friday and is expected back by Wednesday (spelling test is every other week). All login details can be found inside the children’s yellow reading books. Please check in with your children during the week to see how their homework is going and look for teacher feedback.

Reading at Home
It is vital that children read at home both independently and with an adult. Please set aside 20 minutes for reading every day and ensure they bring their reading book and reading record to school every day. We will check these daily. Please look at the information in the front of your child’s reading record for more information.
Meet the Team (year 5 virtual meeting) Parents Meeting
On Thursday 24th September, 4.30-5pm we will be holding a parents welcome meeting where you will get the chance to meet the year 5 team online, learn about homework and our expectations. All slides and resources will be emailed to you. If you have any questions at the end of the meeting please email the admin team at admin@beckford.camden.sch.uk . All information will be uploaded to the school website.
Healthy School
Beckford is a healthy school and we try hard to teach children about healthy foods. Please help us by providing a healthy packed lunch. Please also send in a fruit portion to eat after morning play, as lunch is at 1pm. Your child is also welcome to bring in a labelled water bottle.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to the year ahead. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
