Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! We hope that you had a great holiday and are well rested for the new school year. We are very excited to get to know the new Year 2.
Our Topic this half term is All About Me which will give lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning. PE this term will take place on Wednesday mornings. Children will need appropriate PE kits and footwear on this day. In Music, on Monday afternoons, the children will learn about rhythm and pitch. We will work on our ‘inner voice’ too, ready for our Christmas show in December.
In English we will be focusing on story writing using comic and narrative texts. There will be lots of speaking and listening opportunities to help develop vocabulary and grammar. The children will have daily reading activities and read to us during guided reading sessions. We will also do daily phonics/spelling lessons, and a weekly spelling test. We will continue to focus on developing handwriting and would appreciate your support with this at home too.
In Maths, learning will be developed through the use of concrete equipment and picture representations as well as abstract numbers. We appreciate your continued support in practising counting, numbers that add to 10 and 20, and simple mental calculation, as well as exploring real life examples of maths at home such as money and time.
Science will be based on Healthy Living. We will be discussing healthy eating, exercise and hygiene. This learning will also be supported through Cookery lessons. Each child will have the opportunity to spend half a day working with the school’s Cookery teacher in our kitchen to learn more about where food comes from, and how to make healthy dishes.
The children will change their reading books, choosing a colour levelled book from the class book corner. Please support their progress in reading by listening to them at home and asking questions about what they have read. You might ask about what happened, what they think will happen next, and how characters are feeling/behaving. Each child has a Reading Record for you or the children to make comments. Please send the book bag and Reading Record every day as we will be reading with the children individually across the week.
A list of spellings to learn will be given out on Fridays and tested on the following Friday morning. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings on the back of the spelling sheet provided.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school is open from 8:50am and lessons start at 9 o’clock. To promote independence, we ask that you allow your child to enter the year 2 corridor and organise themselves without you following them in. The children will be provided with support to get them used to their new systems.
Thank you for your support in ensuring school uniform is worn consistently. Jewellery, with the exception of stud earrings, is not allowed for safety reasons. As a Healthy School, packed lunches should promote healthy eating habits and not include sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy drinks. We are very happy to celebrate a child’s birthday with their class, however we will do so through stickers, so please do not send in food.
If you have any further questions or thoughts you wish to share with us, about year 2, please make an appointment to see one of us. There will be an opportunity to ask us at our Parent Event too, on Wednesday 18h September at 3.40pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
